General Usage of Search Engine
|
To use the DCS technical report search engine,
you must select at least one database to be searched. The available
databases at this time are:
- DCS:
Department of Computer Science
- CSRG:
Computer Systems Research Group
- DKBS:
Data and Knowledge Base Systems
- NA:
Numerical Analysis
- THEORY:
Theory of Computation
If the keyword input box is left blank, instead of searching
for keywords, all technical reports in the specified database(s)
will be shown. In this case, the search fields that are selected
(if any) will be ignored.
When a keyword search is performed, you may choose from the following
search fields: Title, Author, Date, and
Technical Report Number. Alternatively, you may select All
Fields to indicate that you would like to search all of the
above four fields. It may be helpful to view the
list of all technical reports, if you are unsure of the format
of the text in these fields.
If more than one keyword is
entered, the search engine interprets the space between words as an
OR. If you would like to include a space between words in your
search, you must enclose the words within double quotes.
Please type in parts of names or words if you are unsure of
their correct spelling. This is not a token-based search. All
partially matching patterns will be revealed.
If there are technical reports that have the same number of matches,
this technical report search engine will list the matching technical
reports in order of the largest number of matches, followed by the
largest total number of matching characters in the keyword(s).
Case
The user of this search may choose a case insensitive
search where no distinction is made between uppercase and
lowercase characters, or a Case Sensitive search
where matches are only shown if the case is identical.
Format
The user may choose between three different output formats.
The Citation format shows the entries in bibliographic
form. The BibTeX format prints the entries in a form
suitable for inclusion in the bibliography of a LaTeX
document. If Count Only is chosen, a count of the
total number of matching technical reports is displayed.
Max. Matches
The user may specify the maximum number of matching technical
reports that will be displayed on the screen. The options
for this field are 10, 40, 100, and
ALL. If ALL is selected, then all technical
reports will be displayed.
When the technical report search generates a match, a web page that
lists the matching technical report(s) will be shown using the
specified format. If the technical report has a hypertext link,
this indicates that a copy of this technical report is available
electronically.
The link may be to a postscript file (which may be compressed), or to
the FTP directory that corresponds to the technical report. If the
link is to an FTP directory, you should start by examining the
README file in the directory (if it exists). Each directory
usually contains a number of postscript files comprising the contents
of the technical report.
The keyword input box allows a maximum of 300 characters
to be entered for a search. The HTML form will not accept
any more than this number of characters.
Only the first 20 keywords entered will be considered in
the search. The remaining keywords will be ignored.
The maximum length allowed for a keyword is 80 characters.
Characters beyond 80 will be ignored.
You may press "submit" below to activate the specified
technical report search. Notice that a keyword box may contain
any combination of words that may or may not be enclosed in double
quotes. Only spaces included in double quotes will be considered as
part of the keywords in the technical report search.
