A Compelling Challenge -- A Timely Response

What if there were a simple and effective way to reach out to tens of thousands of Canadians in today's fastest growing sport? What if there were a simple and effective way of preventing injuries related to that sport? What if you could play a part?

In-line/roller skating is Canada's fastest-growing recreational sport. And that is no surprise -- it's fun, great exercise and efficient transportation. What's more, it's a sport for everyone - men and women, girls and boys. There will be an estimated four million in-line/roller skates sold by 1997 and the number is expected to continue to increase.

As with most recreational activities, there is some risk of injury from in-line/roller skating. Health Canada estimates that the number of in-line/roller skating injuries increased 50% between 1993 and 1994. And without national, provincial (and in most cases) local safety standards, regulations and training, the rate of injury will continue to increase.

Fortunately, most injuries can be prevented. Surveys show that most skaters - new and old - want safety training and education.

The Canadian In-Line/Roller Skating Association (CIRSA) is responding to this need by developing national safety standards for in-line/roller skating, plus a new national public program entitled Hit the Pavement - The National In-line Skating Safety Program. Aimed at existing and future in-line skaters, the program will consist of a series of workshops and a public awareness campaign designed to:

* develop and implement national safety standards and curricula,
* increase knowledge of in-line/roller skaters' safety/injury prevention, and
* improve in-line/roller skating skills.

These three goals will increase in-line/roller skater's enjoyment of skating and the longevity of the sport. As a company interested in reaching out to Canadians in today's fastest growing market, why not partner with CIRSA to deliver the Hit the Pavement program?

Join the team! Play a role! A Distinctive Opportunity

The Hit the Pavement - The National In-line/Roller Skating Safety Program represents an exceptional promotional opportunity for Canadian companies that care about the safety and fun of in-line/roller skaters. It's a timely and essential product, in a valuable target market. And that makes it an ideal sponsorship opportunity for your company.

The Market

Hit the Pavement - The National In-line/Roller Skating Safety Program will reach out to a large and diverse group of up to 10 million Canadians. The program will be designed for young and old in-line/roller skaters - particularly families, teenagers and the young adult market.

The Products

The Hit the Pavement Workshop will be a series of half-day sessions given by certified CIRSA Instructors. With an emphasis on hands-on experience, the workshop will cover skating safety and skills (from beginner to extreme) in a fun and enjoyable manner. The workshops will be given in open paved areas, (such as a parking lot), with various stations serving specific interests and needs. Local media awareness campaigns will publicize the workshops.

The Hit the Pavement Public Awareness Campaign will be a three-year national communications campaign designed to raise awareness of in-line/roller skating safety issues, while building the profile and attendance of the Hit the Pavement Workshop. The campaign will grow over the three years to include public service announcements, publications aimed at the parents of young skaters, and a nationally broadcast television special (to be confirmed).

The Timing

A limited number of select partners will be invited to participate in this highly visible program from 1997 to 1999. We are planning to continue the Hit the Pavement Workshops and Awareness Campaign past 1999, but for now, we are planning for the next three years.

In 1997...

CIRSA's Safety Committee will develop national safety standards for in-line/roller skating; curricula will be developed for the Hit the Pavement Workshops; CIRSA Instructors will be selected and trained; workshops will be held in ten to fifteen Canadian cities; curricula will be refined in preparation for the national roll-out in 1998; and the national awareness campaign will begin.

In 1998...

Hit the Pavement Workshops are planned for delivery in more than 50 communities from coast to coast, offering thousands of skaters the chance to build their skills and prevent serious injuries. Canadians from coast to coast will receive safety and skills messages from the awareness campaign, including a planned, nationally televised television special.

In 1999...

we plan to deliver more than 100 Hit the Pavement Workshops throughout the year in various communities. The awareness campaign will be expanded to reach more and more Canadians while raising the profile of the events and our sponsors.
