NEWS RELEASE, May 4 1998 THE UNIVERSITY OF REGINA COUGARS EXPAND ATHLETIC PROGRAM The University of Regina is pleased to announce today the expansion of the Cougar Athletic Program to include two new women's sports for the 1998-99 CIAU competitive season. Women's Hockey and Women's Wrestling will be added to the current 10 sport profile. These additions will bring gender equity to Cougar Athletics by offering 6 CIAU sports for women and 6 for men. The two new sports have both operated as successful clubs on campus and have proven their ability to be competitive at the CIAU level. The university will begin the search immediately for women coaches to provide leadership in both these programs. In addition, the Cougars today announced their intention to add two more sports in the 1999-2000 season. In 1999 the Cougars will add a developmental club program in Womne's Soccer. This club will participate at a local and provincial level with the goal to particip[ate in CIAU competition in the near future. At the Canada West Annual General Meeting, May 5-8 in Vancouver the Cougars will declare their intention to participate in the sport of Football for the 1999 season. This will be possible as a result of the development of a community partnership agreement with Canada's most successful junior football club Regina Rams. The club will be known as the University of Regina Rams. Other details of agreement will be finalized over the next year but fundamental to the agreement is that the Rams organization will be responsible for the ongoing operation of the team. Teh expansion of the program has created an opportunity for women on campus to acheive athletic excellence and has dramatically increased the overall profile of university athletics in our community."
