CIAU Women's Ice Hockey Championship
Tournament Summary: February 28, 1999

TORONTO-The Concordia Stingers are the 1999 champions of Canadian university women's ice hockey.

In the gold medal match of the CIAU Women's Ice Hockey Championship on Sunday night at the University of Toronto's Varsity Arena, the Stingers beat the Alberta Pandas 2-0.

Concordia kept up an impressive forecheck in the early going, but didn't get onto the board until 2:01 into the second period, when Annie Boucher scored on the power play.

Stingers defender Deana Huyghebaert added an insurance marker for Concordia 12 seconds into the third period.

With its silver medal, Alberta, which defeated OUA champion Wilfrid Laurier and QSSF runner-up McGill in the preliminary round, improves on its fifth-place finish at last year's national tournament.

In the bronze medal match, the host Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the OUA champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 1-0.

The victory marked the second straight year Toronto has finished in the medals. Last year, the Blues were the CIAU silver medallists.

Toronto captain Jen Rawson scored the game's only goal on a power play at 13:56 of the second period, with Bridget Bates and Rhonda Mitchell assisting. Keely Brown had to stop only 10 shots to record the shutout.

Charmaine Boteju made 30 stops for Laurier in a losing cause. The two OUA powerhouses had high expectations for the championship, but were each foiled in 3-2 defeats in the preliminary round. The Blues lost to Concordia in an overtime shootout on Thursday night, while the Hawks lost to Alberta on Saturday. With the losses, both teams finished 1-1, which placed them second in their respective pools and relegated them to the third-place game.

Earlier in the day, the McGill Martlets defeated the St. Francis Xavier X-Women 5-2 to win the fifth-place game. This was the first year in the tournament for both clubs.

For the Martlets, captain Dana Rittmaster scored a hat trick and Julie Hornsby added one goal and two assists. St. F.X. captain Sarah Racicot had two markers in a losing cause.
