General Information

Canadian women's university hockey teams compete under the umbrella of the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU). League play takes place within four regions in Canada: the Canada West (CWUAA), Ontario (OUA), Quebec (QSSF), and Atlantic (AUAA) regions. Please see the Canadian women's university hockey page for a complete list of teams in the CIAU.

This page contains the results of the championships that took place within each of the four regions in Canada. The top team from the CWUAA, the two top teams from the OUA, the two top teams from the QSSF, and the top team from the AUAA competed in the first-ever women's hockey CIAU Championship, which was hosted by Concordia University from February 26 to March 1st 1998.

ATLANTIC (AUAA)

Saint Mary's University won their respective conference qualifying
tournament and will represent the AUAA at the CIAU Women's Ice
Hockey Championship.

CANADA WEST (CWUAA)

The Canada West conference used a tournament to determine their
conference representative, as they did not have any regular season
league play in place during the 1997-98 season.  The University of
Alberta defeated the University of Manitoba 4-3 in overtime to
claim the right to attend the first-ever CIAU national championship.

CWUAA Qualifying Tournament @ University of Calgary
February 12-15, 1998

The Canada West conference used a tournament to determine their conference representative, as they did not have any regular season league play in place during the 1997-98 season. The University of Alberta defeated the University of Manitoba 4-3 in overtime to claim the right to attend the first-ever CIAU national championship.

The top two teams in the A and B pools cross over in the semi-final on Feb 14th, with the winners advancing to the final on Feb 15th at the Father David Bauer Arena.

Ontario (OUA)

OUA Qualifying Tournament @ U of Toronto
February 14-15, 1998

The top four teams in the OUA league competed at the OUA championship at Varsity Arena at the University of Toronto. The teams in the OUA include the University of Toronto, the University of Guelph, Wilfred Laurier University, York University, Queen's University, and the University of Windsor. The University of Guelph defeated the University of Toronto by a score of 3-2 in the second overtime period to claim the gold medal.

Quebec (QSSF)

QSSF Qualifying Tournament @ various locations
February 13,15,18,20 1998

The second and third place teams in the QSSF league will play a semi-final match on February 13th, 1998. The winner of this game will then compete in a best of three series with the number one team in the QSSF league.

Feb 18: UQTR (3) vs Concordia (6) -- best 2 of 3
Feb 20: UQTR vs Concordia -- game not required


Atlantic (AUAA)

AUAA Qualifying Tournament @ UNB
January 16-17, 1998

The tournament was a single elimination tournament with a consolation round and a two game total point championship. Saint Mary's won the championship in a 2-1 double overtime decision over Acadia.
