Since that post I have decided to sell my entire collection on Manon. I have almost $3000 worth of cards, replica jersey's, photos, magazines, pucks, game used equipment, everything imaginable!! I have failed to locate just three Classic cards that were ever produced on her. I also have just about every oddball - unlicensed type of card on her. I've been collecting on her since 1992. If you are interested in aquiring any item, or items, or the entire collection for that matter, please E mail me with your request. Ellen, The Seattle Wings Women's Hockey Club will be hosting their Annual Spring Tournament again this year. This will be the tournament's 5th year, and it keeps getting bigger & better. We are still negotiating with two area rinks for the exact time, but we hope to once again play for the three days of Easter weekend. Past tournaments have included teams from Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, California (including yours, the Valkyries), Colorado, Minnesota, Idaho, Oregon, & Washington. The tournament is open to 18 - 24 women's teams (playing at C.A.H.A. "AA" level). Teams must be registered & insured with USAHockey, or C.A.H.A. (or whatever their countries' Ice Hockey governing body.) The Tournament is divided into two divisions, Tier I & II, and each division ends in a playoff, & final (& trophy.) All teams are guaranteed at least three games (or more if we can secure a second rink) plus playoffs if successful. The weekend provides much fun beyond the hockey, with lots to do and see in the Seattle Area. When final details are worked out, hopefully within thirty days, I will post them to the list, and rec.sports.hockey. This information is from the National (Canadian) Team summer bulletin which is put out by the CHA (Canadian Hockey Association): "The first national women's ice hockey final was held in Sydney, Australia in February 1995. Interest in the sport is growing, and organizers are convinced of the viability of national competition. A development league started last year (1994-95), and it consists of under-14, under-16, under-18, and under-21 women's teams. Girls as young as 11 and 12 years of age are taking over the ice, and they are developing well. With women's ice hockey being accepted as an Olympic sport, publicity officer, Carol Freeman, believes it is only going to get better in Australia." I have added this information to my international women's hockey web pages. I now have information on women's hockey in the following countries: United States Finland Sweden Switzerland Norway Germany China Great Britain Russia Latvia Denmark France The Netherlands Japan Italy Australia Some of the information is pretty limited, so if you can provide any more information whatsoever, please email it to me and I'll add it. There are a number of countries for which I currently don't have any information at all. Again, please send any info my way and I'll add a web page. Much thanks to those of you who have already contributed. Currently no info for these countries: Czech Republic Slovakia Ukraine Austria South Africa Yes, there really is hockey in South Africa!! Manon just finished playing in a beach roller hockey tournament in California. She was on a women's team that was comprised primarily of Team USA and Team Canada women's ice hockey players. They were the only women's team playing in a men's tournament. I believe that it was held at Hermosa Beach, and it took place Sept 9-10, 1995. Manon will be at the Team Canada Women's tryout camp at the Teen Ranch Arena in Caledon, Ontario, Canada from October 14-20, 1995. Anyone is allowed to watch the tryouts, as far as I know. The next event for Team Canada is the Pacific Rim Tournament which will be held in Vancouver, Canada from March 31-April 6th, 1996. If Manon is selected at the camp, then she'll probably be playing for Team Canada at that tournament. The four countries which will be competing in the tournament are Canada, USA, Japan and China. Some of the other goalies who will be trying out for the Canadian National team are Mary Claude Roy (Team Canada 92), Sarah Couch (Toronto Redwings AA), Lesley Reddon (Team Canada 94, now playing in New Brunswick), and Chantal Toth. Here's a correction to the above information. The goalies who will be at the Team Canada training camp are: o Manon Rheaume (Detroit Vipers? for 95-96) (Team Canada 92/94) o Mary Claude Roy (not sure of 95-96 team) (Team Canada 92) o Brenda Deneault (Toronto Redwings AA) o Lesley Reddon (in New Brunswick for 95-96 season) (Team Canada 94) o Chantal Toth Sarah Couch is in the Team Canada player "pool" but will not be attending the training camp in Caledon. There are 69 players in the Team Canada player pool, but only 52 of these players will be going to the training camp in Caledon. According to the Team Canada high performance program newsletter... "The camp will allow us to narrow this group even further to a `squad' of players who will receive a personalized training program and closer monitoring as potential Team Canada members for the 1996 Pacific Rim Championship slated for April 1-6, 1996 in Vancouver." I don't think I have mentioned it here before, but I will not be trying out for Team Canada again, due to a groin/hip injury that just doesn't want to go away. I'm not disappointed about this because I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to play for Team Canada. It was a dream come true for me, and a memory that I'll treasure forever. I even went to hockey camp for a few weeks (Huron Hockey School), where I was, naturally, one of the only girls and subject to a fair share of obnoxiousness. I used to play on house teams in the local rink in the summers, but don't really have the time to do so anymore. I even assistant-coached this past spring (a co-ed kids' team), but don't really have the time for that now, either. It's really gratifying to see women's hockey exploding as it is now. When I started, I was one of two women playing hockey that I knew of in the whole city (the other was a goaltender who also played for Columbia), and I felt pretty isolated. Now I see girls and women of all ages playing everytime I go to the rink, and almost joined an all-women league! (The commute was too hard, though.) A new development in my hockey life is officiating. I just refereed my first 2 games yesterday (got my official USA Hockey crest and card and everything), and it's a lot tougher than I thought it would be (and I thought it would be pretty tough to begin with). I was just wondering if there were any other female officals out there who might be able to give me some tips or share stories or what-have-you. I'm very glad this list exists; it'll be nice to be able to talk to people who won't exclaim, "YOU play hockey?!? I didn't know girls could play hockey!" :-) -- Ali. P.S. I'm also a dedicated Rangers fan, although I don't follow the NHL very closely anymore (I'd rather be playing my own games than watching someone elses!). In an episode late last year, Lisa Simpson, facing a first-ever F on her report card if she didn't take up some kind of sport, found herself being groomed to mind the net for her brother's team. "Lisa," Homer says, "if the Bible has taught us nothing else - and it hasn't - it says girls should stick to girls' sports, such as hot-oil wrestling, foxy boxing, and such-and-such." "I think women should be able to play any sport men play," ripostes Marge, "but hockey is so violent and dangerous!" That pretty much sums up the conventional wisdom about ye olde fairer sexe sharing the conceptual and Zambonified ice with Rocket Richard and 99. But we live in the post-Manon Rheaume era, a time in which women's hockey is growing phenomenally fast - and the ensuing friction between the old boys' network at all levels of hockey and female upstarts tends to produce more heat than light. Herewith, an examination of some of the prevailing idees fixes of women's hockey. * Women are new to the game: Not so - as Brian McFarlane's definitive book Proud Past, Bright Future: One Hundred Years of Canadian Women's Hockey documents, women decked out in sweaters and long skirts were playing shinny (skirty?) as far back as 1891, and some evidence puts the earliest game two years before that. And those women weren't klutzes, either: As the Ottawa Citizen commented in 1896, "That the Alpha and Rideau Ladies Hockey teams can play the game was well demonstrated at the Rideau rink last night. Both teams played grandly and surprised hundreds of the sterner sex who went to the match expecting to see many ludicrous scenes and have many good laughs. Indeed, before they were there very long, their sympathies and admiration had gone out to the teams. The men became wildly enthusiastic." In 1927, a female goaltender, Elizabeth Graham, wisely decided that her nose, cheekbones, and eyes were worth protecting and donned a wire mask - fully 32 years before Jacques Plante began wearing a mask in all his NHL games. The Rivulettes, a team from Preston, Ontario, ruled the roost in the 1930s, with a flabbergasting won-lost record of 348-2. In the wake of Rheaume's 1991 ascension to pro hockey in Tampa Bay, Erin Whitten's similar ascension to the Adirondack Red Wings in '93, and , women's hockey has blown up like a sun going nova. U.S. Amateur Hockey, the sport's Olympic-level governing body, reports that women-only teams (composed of teenagers, usually) increased in number from 149 in 1990-1991 to 417 in 1993-1994. Numbers of players grew more sharply: 5,533 females in 1990-1991 versus 12,392 in 1993-1994. And those figures don't include girls and women playing on boys' and men's teams, which brings up another idee fixe. * "Integrated" teams will destroy women's hockey: That, at least, was the contention of those opposing the 1985 case of Justine Blainey, a hockey-loving 12-year-old who could find no all-girl teams in her suburban Toronto community and lobbied to play on a boys' team, assuming she met fair standards of competence. The team refused, and Blainey's family launched a sex-discrimination complaint with the Ontario Human Rights Commission, which ruled in her favour in 1986. Various appeals took the case all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, but Blainey ultimately prevailed. The fight, however, did not merely pit male players and coaches against women; women themselves disagreed sharply over the proper course of women's and girls' hockey. "Full integration for all ages and in all sports will mean drastically reduced opportunities for female athletes," wrote Fran Rider of the Ontario Women' Hockey Association in a 1988 magazine article. "With uncontrolled emigration of girls to boys' teams, girls' teams will fold, and many girls unwilling or unable to compete with boys will have no chance to play. This is equality?" Significantly, Blainey's supporters did not argue that all-female teams should be prohibited, only that girls should be allowed to play on boys' teams if they so chose and/or if there were no local girls' teams. And no one was markedly in favour of a kind of reverse affirmative action that would allow boys on girls' teams. The dust has settled since that debate took place, and vocal proponents on both sides of the question in the 1980s agree that girls' and women's teams have settled into both integrated and segregated camps, with neither side displacing or threatening the other. For example, at last summer's Gay Games, ice-hockey events included all-female teams (numbering nine), all-male teams (four), and mixed teams (seven); some women played on both women's and mixed teams. There are, of course, a host of reasons for a male/female split beyond mere availability of all-girl teams. Says Helen Lenskyj, associate professor in the department of adult education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and an early Blainey supporter: "You can say all these wonderful things, as I sometimes do, on how the research shows that female-only sports tends to operate on somewhat of a different ethos than men's sport - there's more emphasis on fun and enjoyment and cooperation, and less emphasis on competition, that sort of thing." Still, some girls actually like competition, and Lenskyj says "it's not my role as a feminist to say you shouldn't want to play that nasty competitive sport." And that brings up another preconception. * Women aren't tough enough for hockey: Lisa Simpson was tough bordering on cruel ("Look! Ralph Wiggum lost his shinguard! Hack the bone! Hack the bone!"), but she's not exactly real. As McFarlane writes in his book, "Size and strength may be important factors in basketball and football, but in hockey they are both overrated, especially in women's hockey which, unlike the men's game, is devoid of goons and enforcers. What women lack in strength, some athletes contend, they make up for in endurance and toughness. If women can deal with the stress and pain of childbirth they can deal with anything that happens in a hockey rink. They have, in a word, guts." "You do get to that level from a strength and a power standpoint [where] there are differences between the male and the female," says Karen Kay, head coach of women's hockey at the University of New Hampshire and head coach of the U.S. national women's team. But, Kay points out, there are more variants of hockey than the NHL-style rock-'em-sock-'em that seems to dominate the popular conception of the game. Take women's elite amateur hockey, in which Canada has taken the gold, the U.S. the silver, and Finland the bronze in each of the world championships in 1990, 1992, and 1994. In the '92 playoffs in Finland, Canada whumped the U.S. 8-0. Manon Rheaume made it to the all-star teams in '92 and '94, the same year Erin Whitten was named best goalkeeper of the series. The women's elite game, unsurprisingly, compares favourably with the men's elite game - more physical than recreational hockey but marred by rather less wilful brutality than the NHL. "We don't have full checking, but we do have body contact," Kay says. "You see a lot of riding out on the boards and angling people off, same as you do in the men's game, but you don't see the fighting or the follow-through you see in the men's [pro] game." And it's not as though there isn't incidental but potentially bruising body contact in women's elite basketball and soccer, including the European pro leagues. NHL hockey per se may literally be king of the hockey hill at the moment, but itis not the only standard of comparison whether you're talking about sex-segregated or -integrated teams - and that brings up the final stereotype. * On a guys' team, women are too small to play anything but goal: It's no coincidence that Rheaume, Whitten, and Dyer play goal in the NHL and not some other position. It's a widely-held belief that, between the goalposts, size and brute strength are less valuable than quick reflexes and agility. Goal, the Toronto Star's Rosie DiManno wrote in 1992, is "the only position in hockey where an adult female can realistically keep up with an adult male." While strength is not readily quantifiable without exhaustive tests, the results of which would likely not be made public, size is quantifiable and the stats are available. Tallying up the heights and weights of current NHL players and all the women on the medal-winning Canadian, U.S., and Finnish world's teams (filtering out duplicates) reveals that not all NHLers are Shaquille O'Neal-esque, nor are all elite women Linda Hunt-esque. Average Minimum Maximum Median Women Height, in. 65 48 70 65 Weight, lb. 139 92 172 139 H+W index 205 140 242 203 Men Height, in. 73 66 78 73 Weight, lb. 194 155 235 195 H+W index 266 223 313 266 ("H+W index" assigns one point for each inch of height and each pound of weight. It's a way of averaging out the relationship between height and weight.) There are 35 NHL players smaller (in H+W index) than the largest world-championship woman. Now, that's a small fraction of the NHL's 600-odd men, but it ain't zero. On the other hand, the smallest NHLer is bigger than 90 elite women. While these results do suggest that stereotypes about the impact of body size on hockey carry some weight, they also show that exceptions exist. If there's room in the NHL for 35 woman-sized men, there ought to be room for a similar number of woman-sized women. NHL coaches, owners, and scouts (including the first female scout, the San Jose Sharks' Deborah Wright) are quite simply running out of excuses. But we're not holding our breath here: By the time women in pro hockey are commonplace, Lisa Simpson will be grown up enough to try out for the Springfield Squids of the NHL. Our girls team is for kids from 11 to 16 years of age. They have played some older teams and done very well. I think this is a good time to get the girls playing together because up to this age they are pretty comfortable playing on the boys teams. Once the guys start getting a lot bigger, it's probably best to branch the girls off to allow them to develop their own brand of game (which usually ends up stronger on the real skating and puck-handling skills, rather than the 'bashing'-- though not necessarily). The first period began at a fast pace with some end to end plays and some hard hits from the onset. Bracknell suffered penalties at both 02:37 and 05.42 with Guildford however not able to score on the powerplay. At 06:08 Guildford lost two players in the penalty box giving Bracknell a short five on three situation which they failed to convert. It was at 09:05 however that Bracknell scored the first goal of the game due to a Guildford defensive error. Although the Lightning seemed to have a slight edge on possession during the first period they were out shot 13 - 4 although there were no other goals. The second period again sustained a fast pace with the possession of the puck being shared but again Bracknell out shot Guildford 16 - 6 by the 30:00 mark. By this time Guildford found themselves 3 - 0 down following two good goals from Bracknell at 23:27 and 28:32. The momentum again swung in favour of the Lightning for the third period with most of the action coming in the Bracknell zone. 31:06 saw the first goal from the Lightning when Shelley Owen scored her first Guildford goal with a wrist shot from the blue line into the top right hand corner of the Bracknell net. At 40:22 Guildford again found themselves on the powerplay when a Bracknell player received a 2 + 2 penalty. This was followed at 43:18 with another Bracknell penalty to give Guildford a five on three play. This did not lead to a goal mainly due to the play of the Bracknell netminder. Both teams having played hard and fast throughout the 45 minutes showed the final score to be 3 - 1 in favour of Bracknell. The score was a good reflection of the game with both teams having missed a few opportunities. Player of the match for Guildford went to Gill Barton having faced 36 shots in total. I had a long-distance call this morning from my eight-year-old friend Martha. "Hi Louise! Do you know what? I played in a GAME this morning!" "Oh, good! How was it?" "I shot the puck, and I played left wing, and I can really stop now, and it was fun. The other team was boys, and we got one point. They got five. We play another game on Thursday." "That's great, Mar. Were you excited before the game?" "No-o. I was scared. But I'm not now, because it was really fun." "What colour are your team shirts? What number is on your shirt?" "The shirts are red, and um, my number is the answer to life the universe and everything [giggle]" "oh, 42?" Martha's Mum then got on the phone and told me that fortunately Martha finds it much easier getting up for hockey than getting up for school, and then Martha's dad took the phone and said that he thought Mar's team, all novice-age beginners, improved a lot during the game (their first), and that it was fun to watch. I had to hang up at this point, because I had to meet the coaches of our university club teams at the rink to drop off scoresheets for this afternoon's games (our advanced team is playing Michigan State University and our beginners are playing Bowling Green State University.) But my call from Martha just made my day, as a reminder of why I'm involved in female hockey. Louise Mallory *Louise C. What age categories are you thinking of including in your tournament? Do the hockey organizations in Philadelphia use the USA Hockey age divisions of 19 and under (midget), 15 and under (peewee), and 12 and under (squirt)? I don't know how it will complicate your plans that USA Hockey divides Pennsylvania somewhere down the middle - Western Pennsylvania is part of Mid-Am District, and I don't remember the name of the district you're in. Since you apply for tournament sanction permits through your district, will you need to have the tournament in the same district the host teams play in? A "state-wide" tournament can't be used as a playdown toward District and National championships, so you might find it better to invite teams from other states as well. Talk to the Girls'/Women's Section Rep for your district for advice about applying for sanction, getting contact addresses for teams, and other tournament organizing details. Some of the things that are important to consider when planning a tournament include: Refereeing. It is essential that your referees be above reproach. This includes impeccable uniforming, familiarity with the rules you are using (they should understand how to call a no-checking game), and respect for the athletes. Avoid hiring any referees who have no experience with female hockey. Hockey organizations with a commitment to development of the sport (Brampton, for example, or Mississauga, or Hamilton, in Ontario, Fraser/Team Michigan in Michigan) always make an effort to develop competent female officials and to have them work tournaments. Scheduling. You should have a small "cushion" of extra ice time, to allow for injuries, overtime/tie-breaking shots, and other delays. Your timekeepers, referees, and volunteers should all be aware of the importance of running on time. Decide on the length of the warm-up, put it in the rules handout, and stick to it. If you only have 4 dressing rooms, insist that teams clear their dressing rooms 20 minutes after their games, and have volunteers check that the rooms are clean. When you prepare the schedule, try to accommodate the teams which travel the farthest. (For example, you might have local teams playing their first games on Friday night, or playing in the earliest Saturday times.) Make sure the rules for determining first place and tie-breaking are clearly explained. Try to find out as much as you can about the calibre of the various teams (talk to their opponents and to convenors of other tournaments, ask them to give some game scores etc), and try to produce fair matchups. Hospitality. Provide maps of the area to out-of-town teams. Recommend some economical places to stay and some restaurants. Make sure that the arena snack bar is expecting crowds. In your search for tournament sponsors, try to collect some coupons from fast-food restaurants and include these in the team packages. Have all the tournament committee members wear name tags and be visible. Make signs to show new arrivals where the players should check in, where the manager can get a dressing room key, and where one can go to ask questions. Send press releases to the local media ahead of time and immediately after the championships. Make sure the out-of-town teams know where to get skates sharpened and where they can buy tape, mouthguards, chin-straps, sticks .... Income and expenses. Solicit tournament sponsors from local businesses, the recreation departments of municipalities (where the arena is, where your players live), service clubs (especially female ones), and your players' families. For a major sponsor you could include their name in the tournament name, or name one of the awards after them (e.g. The Play It Again Sports MVP Award ...). You can provide program ad space for all your sponsors. (At the Fraser tournament, they have pages and pages of "Good luck Jenny and Peewee Team-mates from Mom, Dad, and Bucky" ads ...). You could sell tournament souvenirs (t-shirts or something), or have a bake sale, or a raffle (check licenses required). You could ask a cell-phone/walkie-talkie company to lend you some equipment and air-time, for communications between the volunteers. In my opinion, it is counter-productive to charge admission to the parents and fans, because you want the tournament to be a showcase of female hockey to your community. Some organizations do charge admission, but this also means having volunteers to check tickets/hand stamps for every player or spectator all day long. My own criteria for a well-run tournament also include frozen pucks, adequate parking, clean bathrooms with enough toilet paper all day long, information available about the host hockey program, and well-balanced games. Whether or not you are able to put on a tournament this season, start planning now for next season. Set the dates, book the ice time, send notices in to USA Hockey so your tournament will get listed in the magazine and in the Girls'/Women's Newsletter. Visit other tournaments and talk to the convenors. Have fun! I'm looking >for any information out there relative to getting help in scheduling of ice >time, i.e., how can we get equity in scheduling in a city-owned facility? You are in the most fortunate of situations with a municipally owned facility. (Except, possibly, for a school or university club in the US, and a school-owned rink, where a case can be made for Title IX to apply). First, do what you can to document the extent of inequity. How many players do you have? How many of your players live in the municipality? How many are adults and how many are children? How would your organization grow if you were able to provide ice time for more teams? And if your ice time were more convenient? (incompatible with school schedules, inappropriate for small children, etc.) Information such as "Here are the names and addresses of 85 of our players who live in the municipality" and "Here are the names and addresses of 25 prospective players that we had to turn away last year because our teams are full" or "Here are the names and addresses of 15 local girls who are play in other municipalities/on boys' teams because we can't provide them with enough ice time" is very helpful. Are there problems getting adequate private changing space for your female players, coaches, and referees? Do the arena workers allow boys' games to run overtime, but call curfew on your ice time? Do the other organizations using your facility have preferential treatment in any other ways, such as allocation of storage space, bulletin board space, or ownership of the snack-bar concession? Notice these things and document them as well. It helps your case to be sure you're following procedures correctly about applying for ice time, paying promptly, giving notice when cancelling, and so on. (Don't give the rink manager/recreation department staff a chance to say to their bosses "Those women always pay late" or "This is a new organization and I don't think it's going to last - we shouldn't disrupt our regular customers for them" or "They are taking advantage by having adults play in times reserved for minor players" or "Half this team doesn't even live in the city".) You may want to consider adopting a policy that your teams don't play male teams, or at least that your teams do not use their home ice time to play male teams - because if you are insisting that it is important for your municipality to provide facilities access for *female* hockey, (despite the fact that there are opportunities for girls to play boys' hockey in your city), your actions should be consistent in demonstrating that your organization is for girls/women who want to play *female* hockey. Work at increasing your visibility and credibility in the community. Would the community newspapers include your game scores or reports if you brought them in every week? Send press releases before and after important games, to members of the media, recreation department staff, and elected officials. Make sure there's something about your program posted on bulletin boards in the arenas, in the swimming pool, in the schools, in the scout-hall. Do recruiting displays in malls. Everybody in your city should be aware that "we have girls' hockey here." Learn "who is who" among municipality employees. Do the managers of each facility report to the Director of Culture and Recreation, who usually makes the ice time allocations? Have the arena managers usually been doing their own scheduling? Learn to whom the employees report: who are the officials that you and your fellow voters elect? Is there a "Recreation Committee" made up of some members of city council? Does the Director of Recreation and Parks report directly to City Council? Find out the names of the recreation committee members and other city councillors. Invite them to your games. If any of your parents is acquainted with them, encourage informal lobbying. [In my home town, the first time my mother made a presentation to the recreation committee to expand our program from two teams for women to include teams for girls of all ages, she found out that one committee member lived across the street from a 13-year-old would-be player, who spent hours every day taking slapshots alone in her driveway. That committee member understood immediately that Mum's proposal was about giving Debbie a place to play.] Prepare a document for the recreation committee outlining your requests for next season and the justification for them (why you need the time, and why it would be fair). Ask to make a presentation to the recreation committee. If you don't get what you need from the recreation committee the first year, continue to develop a respectful relationship with them while working on explaining your situation to other council members, members of your community, and the press. Make sure that your parents and your adult players understand the issues and what they can do to help. Be persistent! Louise *Louise C. This is a very informed piece. I'm going to print it and file it for possible future use. My girl's and women's team had a bit of a problem with our ice time last year, and only required some persistance to solve. The previous year we have ice time at noon Sundays. We always pay for our ice time promptly up front. The rink, which is a county facility, but most of our players do not live in that county, told us we could either have 6:00pm Saturday nights or 11:30 pm Sunday night. The rink apparently wanted to add some figure skating patch time at noon, and we argued that we had the right of first refusal for that ice slot. We also argued that a) why was our team (we were the only women's team who bought time at this rink) the one being displaced? b) why wasn't everyone moved back an equal amount? and c) if they wanted to move us, they should offer ice of a more equal time. While some of us were beginning to call a local news station (if the situation were resolved, they could still do a story on women's hockey. If not, they could report on that.), others proceeded to call the rink's management daily, escalating to hourly. That was for the '94-95 season. Our efforts paid off, and they gave us our noon slot back. One employee warned us that we might not get it this year (95-96), but we did without a problem. Is there anybody out there who knows about female teams in the Cleveland area?? I used to play Hockey in Germnayt, on the lowest "just go on the ice and have fun"-level, and then I came here to the states and I was sure that I could improve my skills and make all my colleagues jealous when I go back to Germany in 1997. But - it was not easy at all. It took me five weeks to get the first contact person, another two weeks to talk to someone (instead of jsut leaving message on answering mashines), and once I really managed to go to Cleveland to see a team practice - only to find out that my information was wrong and that there was no one at all. See - I am depressed. I really want to play again. Can anybody help me? I'll go back home for Christmas, but after Jan 15, 96 i'll be bakc here - longing for a good training session or even a fun-game. BTW, I'm 31 - and onthe skill level of "kindergarten". As I said - I just want to have a good time. Thanks for any help or support you can give me. I am 16 years old, and I have wanted to play ice hockey for as long as I can remember. Does anyone know about a women's hockey team around Portland, OR? My dad used to play, so he said that he'd teach me, but it would be easier if we had a team to play with. I've played "Gym Hockey" as I call it in P.E., and that got me excited about the sport. My friends all think I'm crazy to start now, but it's never too late to learn something new. I can ice skate just fine, and I've been working on my hockey stops, but I need training. The crowd seemed to be partisan to the Chiefs, or at least the Chiefs fans were more vocal. My wife and I taped the game to show her "C" team. I think they will be inspired. My name is Bridget Bates and I am a member of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Womens ice hockey team. We are members of the OWIAA which stands for Ontario Women's Inter-collegiate Athletic Association. Our team is doing well this year. We have played and won seven league games which puts us in first place with fourteen points. I am proud to be a member of the Varsity league there are some AWESOME players in this league. I am writing to tell you about one of them. Many of you may have seen the name Andria Hunter flash through this women-in-hockey news. Andria does a lot to support women's hockey through this internet, but her best support is shown by her attitude and skill level on the ice. Last year when I joined the Varsity Blues I was able to play a few games as a right winger on Andria's line. She taught me more in that season about skills, team play, and personal goals than I have ever learned throughout my thirteen years of playing hockey. If you ever see Andria play you will notice that she heads "straight to the goal with purpose in every step". She is a consistent role model for all of her team mates. I want to thank Andria and compliment her for all of her efforts. With Andria's lingering injuries she has still been able to surpass any efforts of any player in our league. Last week she was awarded the University of Toronto athlete of the week, the OWIAA athlete of the week and then the CFTO athlete of the week. She has also captured the leading scorer title in the OWIAA league with about 27 points in seven games. The best part of Andria is her modesty. I am playing with my life by writing this about her and I am sure she will make my computer explode after mailing this, but I feel that as much as she is modest she needs to be fully recognized as one of the very best female ice hockey players in the world. It is unfortunate that team Canada is missing out on her due to her injuries. When our team congratulates her she is always quickly passing the credit to other team mates. She is a true hockey hero and I know that she will continue to excell in this great sport. If you get a chance to see Andria play hockey I am sure you will not be disappointed. If you have young female hockey players in your life bring them out to see her play. If you write to her I am sure she will post her schedual of games. She is a great player and an awesome person. One that I am honoured to be around. Good luck in all your hockey efforts and thank you to all of you who have participated in this women-in-hockey. The people at Brown and the ECAC are doing a great job. The added detail of the Honor Roll and the short game summaries are very enjoyable. Merci! I have suggested to the people who put out the release that they consider adding a Defensive player of the week award, like the WCHA. Now I love offense more than most people, but I feel defenders and defensive forwards deserve some credit, and not just when they get a couple of points. To me stats do not tell the whole story. Having attended both Harvard Women's games last weekend, I find it hard to believe that AJ Mleczko is player of the week. Padding one's stats against a non-league side can hardly be much of an achievement. Throw in a few cross-checks and I really don't get it. Someone on UNH had to have a heck of game in defeating Colby in a league match and holding the USA Selects to only a 3-5 loss. My point is, what with Info-Hockey-L and various web sites, I feel a more informed choice could be made. Using stats is not always the best concept. _____________ / good shooting hungerf _____________/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Dec 1995 14:01:21 -0800 From: junior@televar.com Subject: tournament formatting HELP !!! Have a partial round robin where each team plays 4 of the other 5 teams, and give awards based on standings after the round robin. An advantage of this is that no team will play the same team twice. 2. Have a partial round robin where each team plays 3 of the other 5 teams. Based on standings after the round-robin, have 1 play 2 for 1st place, 3 play 4 for 3rd, and 5 play 6 for 5th. An advantage of this is that the awards are determined directly by winning one game, rather than by counting up goals for and against, etc. 3. Change the format. Recruit 2 more teams, or reduce your entry fee and offer 3-games-guaranteed, or do something else creative. This 4-games-a-team assumes that you've got 12 game-lengths of ice time plus enough of a cushion for injuries, tie breaking, and so on. Do you really have this much ice? Why not 9 slightly-longer games (3 per team) instead? Or use the extra ice time to put on a clinic, have an open skate for players and fans, have shootout competitions and skate races, or invite two elite female teams to play an exhibition game? If you're in an isolated area and these 6 teams are the only ones able to travel to your tournament, consider putting on a Jamboree instead. In a Jamboree, all participating players are divided up onto fair teams for the day. That way, a wider age/skill range of players can participate in competition, and individual players can play even if the rest of their team can't. Louise *Louise C. Thanks! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Dec 1995 17:28:43 -0500 From: Manon33@aol.com Subject: Manon Rheaume Paraphernalia Hello! If anyone on the list is looking to aquire collectibles on Manon I have quite a bit for sale! I have started to unload everything from my collection. I have authentic replica game jersey's from every pro team she has played on. Each jersey is home white and has all lettering, numbering, and patches sewn on. The jersey's were never worn. The Tampa Bay Lightning and Atlanta Knights jersey's are both autographed. I also have the practice jersey she wore while trying out for Tampa in 1992. It is also autographed. I also have cards, posters, pucks, all kinds of stuff available. If anyone needs info on anything, or wants a complete listing sent to them by snail mail, please send me E mail as soon as possible. We knew it dated back long ago, but recently the University of Mn found a trophy from the U of M Women's Athletic Association Ice Hockey Cup dated February 27, 1917, when the class of 1919 won the first Women's Ice Hockey Cup. Wonder who else had women's college hockey back then? I'm new to the net and to quickly introduce myself (I know, edit, edit, edit): I have been involved in MN Girls' & Women's Hockey Association for something like 14/15 years now. I was secretary for too many years and just this past spring retired. I have been involved with USA Development camps for girls and the women and know all of Team USA members. My daughter plays at the U of MN now - unfortunately too far gone for varsity which starts in 1997. I work at Anoka-Ramsey Community College - my network site as a secretary in the counseling office. Well, anyway = Hello from MN. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Dec 1995 13:27:23 -0700 From: chuqui@plaidworks.com (Chuq Von Rospach) To: tchan@intergate.bc.ca, Subscribers to Subject: Re: 1996 Pacific Rim Women's Hockey Championship At 12:11 AM 12/13/95, Tom Chan wrote: > Corporate Sponsors required. I have two girls who currently play on boys teams, and with a select girls team in another association. I would like to push our association to allow the formation of a girls team in our association. The board is reluctant to allocate the ice time for such a team at this time. I am looking for ways that other associations have used to do the following: 1. Prove that there is sufficient interest to form such a team. 2. Prove the benfits of forming such a team in terms of state and possibly national recognition. 3. Structure the team so that the experienced girl skaters will not be turned off by playing for the team. 4. Describe the process for progression from the local to the national level for players on such a team. Any information that you could provide me would be very helpful. Thanks for your help.
