These are various messages received about the 5th Annual White Nights Tournament in St. Petersburg, Russia. ----------------------- * Date: Apr 25 13:12:40 1996 * From: anafte@mcgraw-hill.com (Amik Nafte) * Women's Open Tournament in St. Petersburg, Russia Andria, I'm looking for women ice hockey players to play in the "Women's Open Ice Hockey Cup of Russia" in St. Petersburg, Russia, in the last week of June, 96. This is the 11'th hour effort to put together a team from North America. I've been asked to help by the Organizational Committee of the tournament. This is the 5th year of the tournament. In the past 4 years there always been a guest team from North America, and they hope to keep this tradition alive. I'll be calling on all my contacts in the USA and Canada, asking for interested players to contact me, yet this will reach only a small population. I'm asking for your help to deliver this message! Information: The tournament has started in 1992 in St. Petersburg as "The White Nights Hockey Tournament", and during the 1994 competition was officially declared by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation as the "Women's Open Ice Hockey Cup of Russia". It is effectively the only club/team competition in Russia. Expected to participate 5 Russian teams. Invitations been sent to a number of European Hockey Federations/teams. In the past, has participated teams from Ukraine, Latvia, Germany, and the USA. The tournament is a part of the "White Nights Hockey Festival", which also includes competition for the old-timers. The tournament opening ceremonies Monday, June 24, 96. The closing on Friday, June 28, 96. My name is Amik Nafte. I'm acting on a behalf of the tournament's Organizational Committee headed by the President of North-Western Region of Russian Ice Hockey Federation, Mr. Leonid Mikhno. I'm one of the original founders of the White Nights tournament. People in the States and Canada may know me for some of my efforts to help organize women's ice hockey in Russia: organizing the Tourney of the Unified Team of Russia, Latvia, Ukraine to the USA and Canada in February of 1993; and in March of 1994 - the tourney of the first Russian National Team to the USA and Canada; and bringing women's teams from the USA to White Nights, and the other tournaments in Russia in 92,93,94. I'd need a firm commitment from players by May 15, else there'll be no team. My e-mail: anafte@mgh.com my work phone: 212-770-4748 my home phone/fax: 516-432-2855 A word of warning: the tournament will take place immediately after Russian Presidential elections in June. The country may be in the state of turmoil. This trip is somewhat adventurous. I'd like to involve in the team making effort - all the people that are interested to play, and all the people that want to help. I'm starting this process by posting my messages to all of you, and will ask the Making Team people to do the same. We shall add the "interested players" and volunteers to the Making Team body, as we get new entries. Let the Team make itself! The process of Team making was initiated on April 25th, when Andria Hunter posted my message to "women-in-hockey" mailing list and to the International Section (Russia) of her pages. Above, are the people that contacted me, by e-mail so far. Below are the profiles submitted by players to me, extracts from your and my e-mail, your most important questions and concerns, and what can we do to resolve it. from Rhonda: >[...] from Sarah: >[...] from Serene: >[...] from Rosann: >[...] from Andria: >If you'd like me to post it for you, just send it my way. from Julia Ashmun: - Julia called me to offer help in this effort. Over the weekend I've called on many friends, and sent by Fax and mail my message to many organizations in the USA and Canada. I hope that we'll get more entries by the end of the week. I'm asking each one of you to do what you can to help the Making of the team. Questions: >the level of competition? - Most of the players on the Russian National Team are expected to participate with their clubs/teams. There'll be some new talent. As for our own team - so far looks competitive. >Most important concern - $$$. The biggest expense is the airfare. I'll be calling tonight on my friends on Air-Canada team, asking them to donate, and to find people in the Air-line who would donate to the team, their "friend" standby tickets. (Employees of the Canada Air are allowed to give 1 ticket a year to a friend. If any of you know friends in the AirLines that would like to sponsor the this effort, ask them.(By the way - the Air Canada guys are also trying to put together a team to fly to this tournament. they are flying stand-by). Andria - could the names of these people be posted on your pages to acknowledge them for their contribution? Julia - is it possible to approach the air lines directly for similar sponsorship? Sending this message to all of you. Do the same with your mail. Amik. -------------------
