------------------------- From: Alan Chim Subject: UBC Womens Hockey Program Date: Thu, 27 Mar 1997 22:04:08 -0500 Information on University of British Columbia Women's Hockey Program The Program: UBC will be one of the only teams in Canada to compete for both a National Club and University Championship. For the 97-98 season, UBC will continue playing in the Lower Mainland Senior AAA league. The winner of the league playoffs will go on to represent B.C. at the Esso Nationals. In addition, the team will compete in the 1998 Canada West University Tournament to be held in Alberta in January. The winner of this tournament moves on to the inaugural C.I.A.U. National Championship. Currently, the team practices three times every two weeks on the main rink at UBC Thunderbird Winter Sports Center. The T-Birds have their own dressing room facility, receive weight room passes to the campus gym and have access to the Athletics department physiotherapist. Practices are every Tuesday and every second Thursday at 4:30 PM. The 1997-98 schedule will likely be expanded to include two weekly practices and one off-ice session. A typical week would look like the following: Tuesday: practice 4:30-6:00 PM Thursday: practice 4:30-6:00 PM followed by chalk talk 6:00-7:00 PM or off-ice conditioning and team building 5:00-6:00 PM Saturday: home game 4:00-5:30 PM + 1 other night: away game UBC current financial commitment to the Women's ice hockey team is the largest of any school in Western Canada. The team's league fees, travel costs and ice times are all covered by the University. Fundraising by the team combined with the team's equipment budget leave very little expenses on the season. Scholarship/Financial Assistance Opportunities: Financial Support at U.B.C. is based on need and academic merit. Athletic support has been removed due to a new Provincial Funding structure. Thus, at the present time, no sport receives athletic assistance.
