This result has been reached after seven years of litigation. The club had applied for varsity status four times since 1979, and began litigation in federal court in 1990. Final approval from the Federal District Judge for the Northern District of New York is still pending. Since the advent of Title IX in 1972, women have been challenging universities across the United States to receive equal treatment. While women have always been active in sports, it is only now that women's team sports are beginning to be nationally recognized and supported. Women's ice hockey will be introduced in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Japan. Women's collegiate ice hockey has been designated as an "emerging sport" by the NCAA. There are over 20 colleges with varsity teams in women's ice hockey, and over 45 colleges with club teams. Colgate University will continue to play in the ECAC Alliance.
