Hi! I am also new to the list. I live in Blacksburg VA, and women's
hockey is an extremely new thing in my area. In fact, we are in the
process of putting together the first ever "all-women's" team in the
Roanoke Valley. (Roanoke, VA is where the Ice Station is which is the
only rink in SW VA that I am aware of. Some of the women who will be
on the team used to travel to North Carolina to play before they built
our rink or played at the Civic Center that the Roanoke Express {ECHL}
use during their season.) Unfortunately, women's interest in playing
hockey in my area is still not as enthusiastic as I'd like, but it is
continuing to grow. For the past few months, we have had a women's
hockey class where about 20 women are learning the game from Pierre
Paiement (retired GM for the Roanoke Express who played for the
Roanoke-Valley Rebels {EHL} when they won the championship in 73.)

Since those classes began in early April, they have had News channel 10
do a story on us, and News channel 13 did one on our class earlier this
week which is airing tonight. The Roanoke Times also did a story on us
which you can read on my website at
http://www.angelfire.com/va/InThePenaltyBox/article12.html
The article is pretty funny, though a couple of us were slightly
mis-quoted... I think everyone knows that it would be awesome if we
could buy full gear at only $350... I spent $75 alone on the jersey in
the photo and slightly over $200 on my sticks. But if anyone knows
where I can get all my pads for about $75, let me know, I need to
upgrade! (just kidding!) The photo on the page is of Pierre and I
demonstrating a stick handling drill to the class. Shortly after that
article ran in our paper, I was asked by USA hockey to be the contact
person for adult women's hockey in Roanoke (which is governed by the
mid-Atlantic region of USA hockey).

In closing, I would like to invite everyone to give me any suggestions
/ comments on the birth of our team. My ears are open, and I would
like to hear any stories about problems or accomplishments made by
anyone who has been at this same situation at some point... The more I
can learn, the better I will be able to help the growth of women's
hockey in SW VA. I look forward to talking to you all!

Take care!
Marcia Krebs
