Women's Hockey in Minnesota

Information

Provided by Lynn Olson, Director Girls/Women's Hockey Minnesota Hockey (formerly MAHA)...

USA Hockey does have the 10 and under age classification for girls nationwide. It was added in the 1998-99 season to try to increase teams at the grassroots level. Minnesota does have girls teams at this level and that number should continue to increase in the coming years as more girls begin to participate at the younger levels. We are proud of our growth in Minnesota at both the youngest and oldest levels of girls/women's hockey and it appears that it will continue. I will provide some numbers after the next Minnesota Hockey (formerly known as Minnesota Amateur Hockey Association - MAHA) annual meeting coming up next weekend in Alexandria, Minnesota. Hopefully, the USA Hockey Registrar for the Minnkota District will have updated numbers for the 1998-99 season.

I just received the latest information on girls' high school hockey in Minnesota and next year there are 113 varsity teams scheduled to participate. Last year we had 98 teams and approximately 50 junior varsity teams. With 113 varsity teams, we believe the number of junior varsity teams may also increase. There are 168 participating high schools making up the 113 varsity teams. Co-op programs are allowed for a two year period of time and then that situation is reviewed by the high school league to see if the program should be split up.

Minnesota will have five Division I college programs next season: Bemidji State University, Minnesota State-Mankato, St. Cloud State University, University of Minnesota-Duluth and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. In addition, the MIAC Division III league will be adding schools to their conference.

It is wonderful to live in a state that is for girls/women's hockey and supports its programs.
