1997 Ontario Provincial Championships

The 1997 Ontario Provincial Championships took place from April 18-20, 1997 in the Brampton and Mississauga area. Ontario Champions were crowned in all of the different age and different levels in three days. Starting Friday at four locations, with a total of 18 rinks, and finishing Sunday afternoon 253 teams competed for all of the gold medals. From Novice A, BB, B, C to Senior AA, A, B, and C. Everything except the highest level Senior AAA were contested (The Senior AAA Championship took place earlier so that the Provincial representative could be determined in advance of the ESSO Nationals). Many of the groups had 10 teams that qualified for their group from across the province. A few of the groups had more than ten teams. It was an amazing weekend of female hockey played in such a short period of time. I personaly found, that out of all the games I watched, the Atom A championship between Windsor and Mississauga the most entertaining of all the games. 1997 Ontario Senior AAA Provincial Results

The Ontario Senior AAA division is also called the Central Ontario Women's Hockey League (COWHL). This is the highest level of women's hockey in Ontario. There are several players from Team Canada and Team USA who compete in this league. The winner of the Ontario Senior AAA Provincial Championship each year represents Ontario at the Canadian Senior National Championship.

The North York Aeros won a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over the Newtonbrook Panthers in the final game of the 1997 Senior AAA Ontario Provincial Championship (hosted by Cobourg from February 7th to February 9th, 1997). As a result, the Aeros will represent Ontario at the 1997 Canadian National Championship in Richmond, BC, from March 6th to 9th, 1997.
