Saturday, October 18, an ECAC All-Star team comprised of players from Cornell, New Hampshire, Princeton, Colby, Dartmouth and St. Lawrence will battle the USA National Team at Everett Arena in Concord, New Hampshire and then an ECAC All-Star team comprised of players from Yale, Brown, Northeastern, Providence, Boston College and Harvard will faceoff against the USA National Team on Tuesday, October 21, at Talbot Rink in Gloucester, Massachusetts. "I could not imagine a better way to kick off the start of our season than this," ECAC Ice Hockey Commissioner Jeff Fanter said. "It will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the sport of women's ice hockey and give the fans an opportunity to see both the players that will represent our country at the Olympics this winter, and the players that represent the local universities in their area. It has been a real pleasure to work USA Hockey and Head Coach Ben Smith in developing what should be a terrific experience for our student-athletes and our fans." 41 ECAC Players on the Roster A total of 41 ECAC student-athletes were invited to compete in the two-game series. ECAC Roots Of the 25 athletes selected to the USA Hockey Women's National Team on August 21, a total of 23 of them played in the ECAC during their college career. Five of those players still have collegiate eligibility remaining and are taking the year off to compete with the National Team. Those players include; Providence's Sara DeCosta (1996-97 All-ECAC honorable mention) and Laurie Baker (1996-97 All-ECAC first team), Brown's Tara Mounsey (1996-97 ECAC Rookie of the Year), Dartmouth's Sarah Tueting and Harvard's A.J. Mleczko. The USA Hockey Women's National Team roster includes each of the ECAC Players of the Year dating back to the 1989-90 season and the combined number of All-ECAC accolades awarded to the 25 players totals 36. Familiar Faces Nine of the invited ECAC All-Stars were members of the 1997 USA Hockey Women's National Festival. From that 24-game festival in Lake Placid the USA Hockey Women's National Team was selected last month. Taking part in that festival were Yale's Laurie Belliveau, Providence's Catherine Hanson and Jessica Tabb, Boston College's Erin Magee, Cornell's Alanna Hayes, Colby's Meaghan Sittler and New Hampshire's Winny Brodt, Brandy Fisher and Carisa Zaban. For a Good Cause The proceeds for each of the games will be used by the two host rinks to help fund sports activities in the community. Revenue from the October 18 game at Everett Arena will be used to kickoff a fund rasier for a 3,000 square foot lockerroom expansion. The money raised at the October 21 game at Talbot Rink will be used to fund sports activities at the 375th anniversary of the town of Gloucester.
