2004 Women's World Hockey Championship

General Information

The 2004 World Championship took place in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada from March 30 to April 6, 2004.

Competition Pools

Initially the countries were divided into the following three groups, with a round robin taking place within each group.

    Group A       Group B        Group C
    Canada        USA            Sweden
    Germany       Russia         Finland
    China         Switzerland    Japan

After the round robin round, the teams were reclassified into three groups. The top 3 teams from the original 3 groups made up group 1, the middle 3 teams from the original 3 groups made up group 2, and the bottom 3 teams from the original 3 groups made up group 3. The countries in each of these new groups are listed below:

Format: Teams played round-robin format in their preliminary round
groups and after the preliminary round were seeded accordingly into
three new round robin groups. Group 1 consisted of the top finishers from
the preliminary round, Group 2 were the second-place finishers and Group
3 were the third-place finishers.

The bronze medal game featured the third-place finisher from Group 2
and the top finisher from Group 3. The gold medal game was between 
the first and second place finisher from Group 1.
