The 2000 Pool A Women's World Championship was held at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada from April 3-9, 2000. This 6th IIHF Women's World Hockey Championship also featured six satellite games in these cities within Ontario: Barrie, Kitchener, London, Niagara Falls, Oshawa, and Peterborough.
Team Canada is World Champion for the 6th time in row. They defeated Team USA by a score of 3-2 in an exciting come from behind overtime win. Team Finland outscored Team Sweden 7-1 to claim the bronze medal.
The top six teams from this championship qualify automatically for the 2002 Winter Olympics (Canada, USA, Finland, Sweden, Russia, and China). The bottom two teams in this World Championship (Germany and Japan) will play against the top two teams from the 2000 Pool B World Championship (Kazakstan and Switzerland) in February 2001 to determine the final two competitors for the 2002 Winter Olympics.
The team that finished last in this World Championship (Japan) will move down to the B Pool World Championship for next year, while the winner of the B Pool World Championship (Kazakstan) will move up to the A Pool.
