Gilmour Becomes First Ohio School To Offer Girls Ice Hockey

GATES MILLS, Ohio, March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Gilmour Academy, one of the nation's leading Catholic independent schools, announced that it will become the first school in Ohio to offer a girls competitive ice hockey program.

Among the nation's fastest-growing sports, ice hockey is growing in popularity with girls taking to the ice in record numbers.

Gilmour's team is the first girls traveling hockey team in Ohio associated with an academic program. Although other teams exist in Ohio, the distance girls must travel for practice often precludes many from pursuing the sport. The fact that members of the Gilmour team will have the opportunity to practice every day in the on-campus ice arena is expected to attract a significant number of female hockey players to the program.

One of the finest facilities of its kind in the nation, Gilmour's 31,500 square-foot ice hockey rink, which opened in December 1997, features a state- of-the-art, National Hockey League-size ice hockey rink.

"The addition of girls ice hockey will provide Gilmour female students with the opportunity to develop hockey skills in full concert with their educational objectives. It is yet one more way in which our students can realize their full potential both on and off the ice," said Brother Robert E. Lavelle, C.S.C., Headmaster.

The addition of the girls hockey team is the next step in Gilmour's growing ice arena program. Currently competing for a state championship, Gilmour's first varsity hockey team, begun in the 1997-1998 season, competes in the 80-team Ohio high school hockey league. During the second season, a Prep team was added to the program and plays against Tier I and Tier II Prep teams on a national schedule. The Gilmour girls team will compete with independent schools in the Midwest and East.

The current ice hockey program draws students from as far away as California, Utah, Texas and Canada. Coupled with Gilmour's strong academic program, the ice hockey program is designed to prepare players for an Ivy League level of college hockey and gives players national exposure to showcase their abilities to college recruiters.

Gilmour Academy, located at 34001 Cedar Road in Gates Mills, is a Catholic, independent, co-educational college preparatory school for Montessori preschool and traditional kindergarten through grade 12. A residency program is offered to students in grades seven through 12. SOURCE Gilmour Academy CO: Gilmour Academy ST: Ohio IN: EDU SPT SU: 03/06/2000 12:01 EST http://www.prnewswire.com
