Team to Compete in Christmas Cup

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (December 16, 1999) - USA Hockey today announced the roster for the 1999 United States Women's Select Team which will compete in the Christmas Cup, Dec. 27-30 in Fussen, Germany. The tournament will also feature National Teams from the Czech Republic, Germany and Switzerland.

The team will be led by Head Coach Steve Cedorchuk (Medfield, Mass.), and Assistant Coach Michele Amidon (Brunswick, Maine). Cedorchuk has previously served on the coaching staff for several U.S. women's camps. He also served as head coach of the Boston College men's ice hockey team from 1992-1994.

As a player, Amidon was a member of the 1992 U.S. Women's National Team that earned a silver medal at the International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship in Tampere, Finland. She currently serves as head coach of the women's ice hockey team at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.

Ron Sellnow (St. Louis Park, Minn.) will serve as team leader. A USA Hockey volunteer for more than 10 years, Sellnow most recently served as Assistant Director of the 1999 USA Hockey Select 16 Festival.

The roster is comprised of high school- and college-age players, all of whom have previously competed on national-level U.S. women's teams and/or participated in the USA Hockey Women's National Festival. The 1999 U.S. Women's Select Team differs from the 1999-2000 U.S. Women's Select Team, which is training and competing from November through March.

Leading the U.S. is goaltender Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I./Providence College), forward Jenny Schmidgall (Edina, Minn./Univ. of Minnesota-Duluth) and defenseman Tara Mounsey (Concord, N.H.), all of whom made history as members of the gold-medal winning 1998 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team.

Joining DeCosta in net is Ali Brewer (Racine, Wis./Brown Univ.), who was a member of the 1998 U.S. Women's Select Team and a finalist for The 1999 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, presented annually to the nation's top intercollegiate women's varsity ice hockey player.

Rounding out the defensemen are Jamie Hagerman (Wenham, Mass./ Harvard Univ.), Kelli Halcisak (Trenton, Mich./Shattuck St. Mary's High School), Annamarie Holmes (Apple Valley, Minn./Princeton Univ.), Kerry Maher (Clifton Park, N.Y./Univ. of New Hampshire) and Bethany Petersen (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson High School). Both Halcisak and Petersen joined the 1999-2000 U.S. Women's Select Team while winning the silver medal at the 1999 Three Nations Cup earlier this month in Montreal, Quebec.

In addition to Schmidgall, 1999 U.S. Women's Select Team forwards include collegiate players Ronda Curtin (Roseville, Minn./Univ. of Minnesota), Kim Insalaco (Rochester, N.Y./Brown Univ.), Andrea Kilbourne (Saranac Lake, N.Y./Princeton Univ.), Melissa McKenzie (Bethel Park, Pa./Univ. of New Hampshire), Laura Slominski (Burnsville, Minn./Univ. of Minnesota), Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass./Providence College) and Carisa Zaban (Glenview, Ill./Univ. of New Hampshire).

Completing the roster are high school forwards Julie Chu (Fairfield, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall), Natalie Darwitz (Eagan, Minn./Eagan High School), Krissy McManus (Dedham, Mass./ Noble and Greenough) and Krissy Wendell (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center High School). Both Darwitz and Wendell were members of the 1999 U.S. Women's National Team that earned a silver medal at the 1999 IIHF Women's World Championship in Finland this past March.
