Manon Rheaume released by Canadian squad

BARRIE, Ont. (CP) -- Manon Rheaume, the only woman ever to play in an
NHL exhibition game, was released from the Canadian national women's
team Tuesday.

Rheaume's deletion from the roster leaves Lesley Reddon of
Fredericton and Danielle Dube of Richmond, B.C., as the two goalies on
the team.

"Manon Rheaume is a fine goaltender, an excellent athlete and a
character person," Canadian head coach Shannon Miller said in a
release.

"She has been an important part of Canada's national women's team and
she may well be again, but this season she has not displayed the
consistency we expect of goalies playing at the world championship
level."

Rheaume, who made hockey history when she played in a 1992 NHL
exhibition game for the Tampa Bay Lightning, has also played in the
professional Eastern Hockey League.

The native of Lac Beauport, Que., played on two previous world
champion women's teams.

Canada has won the tournament, which begins March 31 in Kitchener,
the three other times it has been held, in 1990, 1992 and 1994.
