The Ottawa Sun ============== USA 2 Canada 1 (OT) U.S. doubles up Canada in OT October 25, 1996 URL: http://www.canoe.ca/Hockey/oct24_us_can.html SMITHS FALLS, Ont. (CP) -- Shelley Looney scored her second goal of the night just 15 seconds into the overtime period as the Americans defeated Canada 2-1 in the inaugural Three Nations Cup women's hockey tournament Thursday. France St. Louis of St-Hubert, Que., gave Canada a 1-0 lead at 16:30 of the first period before Looney scored at 15:55 of the second to tie the game. A jam-packed crowd of over 1,650 people watched the round-robin game at the Smiths Falls Community Centre. Despite the loss, Canada's 3-1 record is good enough for a berth in Sunday's final at the Ottawa Civic Centre. Tonight's game between the U.S. and Finland in Ottawa will determine the other finalist. Karen Nystrom, a fourth-year player on the Canadian team, was injured when she crashed into the boards head first while chasing a loose puck near centre-ice in the second period. She was taken away in an ambulance for observation. _________________________________________________________________ CANOE home | We welcome your feedback.
