Christmas 2002

Hello Everyone!

We would like to start by wishing everybody a very Merry Christmas, as well as a Happy New Year 2003! This year, we will be spending our holiday season with Andria's family, in Peterborough and in the Niagara area. We won't be making the trek up to Kapuskasing for Christmas, but we did get to go up to Kap twice this past year.

We went there in June to visit Marc's parents, and to bring them a cute little cat by the name of Tigrou (that's Tigger in French:). We had provided a foster home to Tigrou, his sister Coco, and their mother Sugar for about two months after Sugar and her kittens had been abandoned. Tigrou now brings joy to the whole household in Kap, and is spoiled rotten by Marc's mother.

We also went to Kap during the month of November to visit Marc's parents. His mother is slowly recovering from a stroke that she suffered early in the month of November. Marc's father is feeling slightly better, but is still suffering from the effects of shingles. As far as our extended families go, we lost some dear relatives: Marc's aunts Jeanne and Léontine, Andria's cousin Laurie, and Andria's grandmother.

Andria's parents are busier then ever with their Bed & Breakfast in Peterborough. They also had the pleasure of celebrating two great news items! First, they hosted Nancy (Andria's youngest sister) and Devinda (Dave) Dayaratne's wedding on the farm. Second, Leslie, Andria's eldest sister, is expecting her first baby in the month of May! We'll be an aunt and an uncle for the first time!

As for us, we still only have one "baby", namely, our cat Samba. But who knows:) Certainly the biggest news for us this year would have to be the purchase of our house! We haven't moved in yet, but we're planning to do so by the end of January. We can't wait to have our own place -- no more trips to the Laundromat! Starting in February, here is our new contact info:

The other big news is that Andria had the honour of being a member of Team Canada that won the first ever Women's Inline Hockey World Championship that took place from July 18th to July 23rd in Rochester, NY. It was a dream that Andria had been hoping to fulfill for many years! During the summer, she also played inline hockey in two men's leagues in Toronto, and took part in two women's inline hockey tournaments. In California, her team (Los Angeles Riot) finished in second place, while in Las Vegas, her team (Toronto Typhoon) won the USA Hockey Inline Cup!

As far as ice hockey goes, Andria was awarded the prestigious Isobel Gathorne Hardy award for her contribution to women's hockey in Canada. She was also the guest of honour at a ceremony that was held in Ottawa for the unveiling of a stamp featuring women's hockey as an olympic discipline, which was issued to commemorate the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Andria has now retired from competitive women's hockey and from the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). Last year, during her final season with the NWHL's Mississauga Ice Bears, she finished 3rd highest scorer in the league - not bad for an old timer! She hasn't yet completely hung up her skates though: she still plays two or three times a week, just for fun, and also plays ball hockey with her sister Nancy and her husband Dave.

As far as work goes, nothing much has changed: Andria is still a computer science lecturer at the University of Toronto, and Marc works in computer graphics at Alias|Wavefront. Marc was fortunate enough to spend a week in Germany to attend a conference. Marc also made the trip to Vancouver to attend the wedding of his friend and former boss, Andrew Woo.

Marc still plays hockey with his coworkers at Alias|Wavefront, as well as for the Black Squirrels. The team finished first overall in the "C" division during the winter season, and made it to the finals. In the summer, they played in the "B" division and once again made it to the finals. During the summer season, Andria also played for the Black Squirrels, and plays occasionally with the team this winter.

Finally, we would like to once again wish everybody a joyous holiday season, and all the best for the New Year! God bless.
