Christmas 2001

Hello Everyone!

We'd like to wish all of you a happy holiday season! Since our families live about 900 kms apart, we alternate spending Christmas at Andria's parents and at Marc's. Since we celebrated Christmas in 2000 with Andria's parents in Peterborough, we'll be spending Christmas 2001 with Marc's parents in Kapuskasing. We'll make the long trip to Kap (about a 10 hour drive in good weather), where we will surely have a white Christmas!

There's something new at 275 Delaware! During the winter of 2001, we had a young roommate by the name of Snappy. At first, Snappy was very shy, until its hind leg got caught in the mouse trap (hence, the name we chose)! Since it was in the middle of winter, and since neither Marc nor Andria had the heart to kill this cute little mouse, we kept it in a box for a couple of months. In the Spring, we released Snappy in a park, far away from our house, of course!

After that episode, we decided to find another way to avoid having mice in our house. But mostly, we wanted the company ... so we decided to adopt a kitty! In May, Andria brought home the cutest 6 week old little black kitty from an animal rescue program in Peterborough. We decided to call her Samba, after the name of a computer file server ... and fortunately her name also has the not-so-geeky second meaning of a Brasilian dance! :-)

Just like the computer server, Samba is usually up and running: she loves to run from one end of our house to the other. Her favourite game is playing fetch with a sponge ball in our stairways. We toss her ball down the stairs, and she goes tearing down after it, batting the ball around. She then comes trotting up the stairs with the ball in her mouth, and drops it, waiting for us to throw it down again!

We had thought about getting a cat earlier, but decided to wait until we were back from our trip to Europe. We spent the first 2 weeks of May in France and Switzerland. We spent 5 wonderful days exploring the French Riviera with our friend Pierre Poulin: Nice, Cannes, Monaco, and many other charming villages. We then spent 10 days in Rütschelen, Switzerland, with our friends, the Röthlisbergers, where Andria had lived when she played hockey for Langenthal during the 92-93 season. We took some nice day trips to places like Luzern, Ballenberg, Bern, Interlaken, Solothurn, Longnau, and Weisenstein. One of the highlights was that our friend Bizu organized a get-together with a lot of Andria's old teammates. It was a lot of fun to see our Swiss friends again!

We also made a few trips here and there, to visit our family (Sudbury, Peterborough, Bismarck), or to go to weddings (Sarnia, Peterborough). Samba also loves to travel: she's already been to Sudbury, Hamilton, and Peterborough (a few times), and will be making the trip to Kap with us!

At the start of the year, we lost two beloved relatives: Kim Kyer, Andria's cousin, and Lia Turbide, Marc's Aunt. We loved them very much, and will always remember them: from Kim's talent as a singer, who graced us with her voice at our wedding, to Aunt Lia's affection, her love of the French language, and of course, of Scrabble games. May God be with you.

In terms of work, Andria still teaches at the University of Toronto. She teaches first year Computer Science, either at the St. George campus downtown, or at the Scarborough campus. Marc has been working at Alias|Wavefront since last December. He's finishing his PhD part-time, and recently had an article published in the scientific journal, "ACM Transactions on Graphics."

Andria still plays her two favourite sports (apart from playing with Samba :-), that is, ice and inline hockey. She went to Florida for the North American Roller Hockey Championship, and also played in a men's league in Toronto. She's once again playing ice hockey for the Mississauga Ice Bears (www.icebears.net) in the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). She was named player of the week in the NWHL during the month of October (www.nwhlhockey.com). Marc, after taking a 4 year break, has started playing hockey again, and plays with friends from work for the Black Squirrels (www.blacksquirrels.org).

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and all the best in the new year too! God bless.
